How we started

Our story

Mongol Trails was created by two Mongolians living in Australia. Below is their story, in their own words.

Co-founder

Boko Ingram

From corporate life to the wild places I call home. While Australia has become home, Mongolia will always be where my roots are.

I've always felt drawn to the outdoors and to the freedom of being away from the everyday. Living in Australia has given me a deep appreciation for its incredible landscapes. They are different places, but both remind me how important nature, space and simplicity are.

There is something incredibly powerful about being on horseback in Mongolia, feeling the spirit of the ancestors' land, moving with the landscape rather than simply passing through it. Travelling off-grid, disconnecting from the noise and reconnecting with nature is something I genuinely crave.

I'm passionate about horses, mountains, adventure, nature, culture and meaningful connections with people. For me, travel isn't about ticking destinations off a list. It's about getting out of your comfort zone, experiencing something real and coming home with stories that stay with you.

My professional career has taught me the value of planning, organisation, people and continuous improvement. I bring that same mindset to Mongol Trails, carefully creating expeditions that are personal, responsible and thoughtfully designed.

Together with Oyuka, we want Mongol Trails to connect people with the Mongolia we love, while supporting the communities, culture and landscapes that make it so special. For me, Mongol Trails is about returning to what matters: open spaces, wild places, genuine people and the freedom to simply ride, explore and immerse.

Come curious. Come adventurous. Come experience Mongolia with us.

Meet your host — Oyuka Johnson

Oyuka Johnson

Welcome to Mongol Trails. I'm Oyuka Johnson, and it is my privilege to share the Mongolia I know and love with you.

I am a mother of three beautiful children. I was born into a nomadic Mongolian family and was raised from a young age by my grandmother, a true nomadic woman who was strong, resilient, independent and deeply connected to the land and her way of life. That connection to my roots has stayed with me throughout my life.

I have lived in Australia for the past 18 years, since completing university in Mongolia in 2008. Australia has become a very important part of who I am, but my Mongolian heritage has always remained close to my heart. One of the things that fulfils me most is sharing my culture, my childhood memories and my nomadic heritage with people from around the world.

For me, Mongolia is much more than a travel destination. It is a part of who I am. I love taking people beyond the usual tourist experience and introducing them to the simplicity, freedom and beauty of nomadic life: staying with local families, experiencing the landscapes, learning about traditions and sharing stories around the campfire.

There is something very special about watching someone experience Mongolia for the first time: seeing their reaction to the endless steppe, meeting a nomadic family, riding across open land, or simply sitting quietly beneath a vast Mongolian sky.

A life of learning, travel and people

My professional journey has always been centred around people and helping others. After moving to Australia, I worked in the education and early childhood sector for more than 12 years. Today, I work in the allied health industry as a sports and remedial therapist.

Through both careers, I have loved working with people, listening to their stories and helping them achieve their goals. These experiences have shaped the way I host and connect with travellers.

Travel has always been a huge part of my life. Perhaps that sense of adventure is something I inherited from my nomadic roots. I particularly love discovering the history behind the places I visit, understanding how people lived and how the past continues to shape the world today.

Why Mongol Trails?

Mongol Trails is a way for me to bring together the things I love most: Mongolia, travel, culture, history, nature, people and learning. My hope is that when you travel with us, you don't simply visit Mongolia — you experience it.

I want to share the Mongolia of my childhood, my grandmother's Mongolia, the Mongolia of the nomadic families, wide-open landscapes, ancient traditions and incredible hospitality. I want you to slow down, breathe deeply, meet the people and listen to their stories.

Come with us beyond the ordinary tourist trail and let me take you back to my roots. Welcome to Mongolia. Welcome to Mongol Trails.
