Before you go
Visa and travel info
Mongolia is vast, remote and wonderfully different from conventional holiday destinations. Our expeditions take you beyond the cities into places where roads can be rough, weather changes quickly and modern facilities may be limited. A little preparation goes a long way, and we want you to arrive feeling confident, informed and ready.
Passport and visa
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay and have sufficient blank pages. Visa requirements depend on your nationality and can change, so check current requirements with the Mongolian Embassy or Consulate in your country before booking flights. If you are travelling on an Australian passport, check the latest requirements before departure.
Getting to Mongolia
Most international travellers arrive through Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital and main international gateway. Depending on your expedition, you may then travel by domestic flight, 4WD, horse or a combination. Distances in Mongolia are enormous, and remote destinations may take many hours to reach — the travel is part of the adventure.
Domestic flights
Domestic flights connect us with Mongolia's remote regions and can be affected by weather, operational changes or other unforeseen circumstances. We build flexibility into our itineraries where possible and will keep you informed of any changes. Please allow some flexibility in your travel plans when joining a remote expedition.
Health and vaccinations
Speak with your doctor or travel-health professional well before departure about vaccinations, medications and any personal health considerations. Bring enough prescription medication for your entire journey plus a small additional supply. For remote expeditions, access to medical facilities can be limited, so preparation is particularly important.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. For horse-riding and adventure expeditions, your policy must specifically cover the activities included in your trip, as well as emergency medical treatment and evacuation. Always check the policy wording rather than assuming an adventure activity is covered.
Your expedition, your preparation
Every Mongol Trails expedition is different. Before you travel, we provide a detailed pre-departure guide covering what to bring, fitness requirements, weather, accommodation, transport and cultural etiquette for your specific journey. You don't need to know everything about Mongolia before you arrive — that's part of why we're here.
Tell us the month you can travel. We will help plan around visas and flights from there.
